The requirements of maintaining modern highly sophisticated medical devices can be confusing, with a wide variety of service requirements.

There are 3 simple steps which can effect change:

1. Identify the current level of maintenance achievement;

Finding your current level of completing your planned preventive maintenance is vital to establish the most important areas to examine first.


2. Work out the current level of device utilisation and repair;

Just like any electronic  / electrical / mechanical device, the usage can have a significant impact on the need for maintenance, and training by the way. Working out the utilisation of a type of medical device will give an important input into the subsequent maintenance scheme. The best way is by statistical observation. Other areas of importance include the reason for failures (or repairs), the repair rate, and even the overall cost of management and maintenance per inventory item.


3. Determine the most effective maintenance scheme to achieve the best balance between safety and productivity;

There are many tools that can be deployed in the maintenance of medical devices; these range from daily user checks through to a complete device overhaul or reconditioning. Information gathered from points 1 and 2 will give a good indication of what the mix of tools should be.
